Box Office Barometer 4-25-11

It was a holiday weekend, which means family movies dominated the past three days.  Rio reclaimed its #1 spot, but only thanks to its 3D ticket prices.  Madea’s Big Happy Family came in second by only $100,000.  For someone who has never seen the series, the title wouldn’t indicate the plot, nor would the ad campaign.

Water for Elephants finished third with a decent $17.5 million.  The movie sounds like Saving Private Ryan, except instead of having flashbacks to World War II, Rob Pattinson flashbacks to his life in the circus.  Or, perhaps they were just trying to recreate The Notebook with a senile man revisiting his whirlwind romance.  Either way, just know that the movie involves carnies thrown from a train.

Hop finished fourth in its fourth weekend, something to be expected for an Easter movie on Easter weekend, even if it is just Alvin and the Chipmunks.

The last new release, African Cats, opened at 6 with $6.4 million.  It’s a documentary about lions and such.  Count me in.
